Growth Comes From Real Dialogue

Dan Ahwa, Creative Director for NZFW

Dan Ahwa has spent his career at the intersection of fashion, culture, and storytelling. As a creative director, editor, and one of Aotearoa's most respected voices in fashion, his work has consistently championed New Zealand design on both a local and global stage.

Now, as Creative Director for New Zealand Fashion Week presented by Giltrap Group, he is shaping what the 2026 event looks and feels like from the inside. We sat down with Dan to talk about how he got his start, what NZFW means to him.

You’ve had a career that most in fashion can only dream of. What did you do before NZFW - how did you get your start?

“I was doing merchandising for brands such as Debenhams in the UK, and Polo Ralph Lauren, before assisting stylists and photographers in New Zealand.”

What was your first encounter with NZFW?

“My first main show was styling for Jaeha in 2007. Working with emerging designers has always been an exercise in collaborating without any strict parameters, and to push your creativity further. Being backstage was an insight into working with production which is always fun.”

What advice would you give to those aspiring to break into, or coming up in the industry today?

“Stay curious, do your research, and be open to feedback. Growth comes from real dialogue, not just validation. Learn from people in the industry who can offer you support and champion your ideas.

Be a sponge and engage in dialogue that challenges your ideas - don’t always surround yourself with friends who say yes to you all the time. Be ok with taking on constructive criticism. Don’t take it personal.”
