How’d You Get Started? With Felix Jackson

How did you get your start?

“I started focusing on fashion more during Uni, as I studied a Bachelor of Design (photography major) from Massey University Wellington. A lot of my early learning came from the department's resources, like a studio and equipment, along with my friends and a Uni student's budget to pull concepts together and start producing work for the local scene - hairdressers, local businesses, other student projects. As well as making things within my degree, tailoring an image.

I also shot a lot of street fashion, which fuelled my focus on dress and how we present ourselves, documenting the sartorial and creating a lasting image.”

Was there a turning point or milestone early in your career that stands out to you?

“I feel like I’m still early in the game! But moving to Tāmaki was a major change for finding space for myself in the NZ industry.

Opportunities to learn from photographers and work on larger scale projects is a completely different experience to study.”
