Milan Jeon

As a fashion designer, I draw inspiration from painting philosophies to create my designs. In 2021, I took influences from De Stijl, in 2022, the inspiration was from Cubism, Russian constructivism and the Bauhaus art movements. Currently in my postgraduate studies, I am drawing ideas from a Korean modern art movement called Dansaekhwa. I do this because fashion becomes more meaningful when it is combined with an artful perspective. Fashion can help us to portray our ideas, characters, hopes and sometimes even an important message. Much like paintings, fashion is a visual form. I see the body as a blank art canvas, which can be painted uniquely through the medium of cloth. I believe in this 21st century where rapid consumption is becoming the norm, a meditative perspective on clothes derived from painters can help us to reform a deeper, more mindful relationship with clothes. In this way, humans can become more cognisant of the clothes they choose and prolong their care of them, making them an entity that can be treasured for generations.
